New fantasy race

The task is to plan and develop a project that is based on the professional challenges within a particular subject area when working with a brand. In this project it is expected to explore illustration and visual storytelling.

Brand background

The brief was to create a fully illustrated and coloured race to be delivered to the brand, within a 4 week timeframe. The requirement is to create a base model of a new fantasy race. On these base model(s), it is asked to illustrate how each of the default classes (sword-based, spell-based, ranged-based) would look. The target audience thus consists of current and new players of role playing games who are looking for fresh material in the game and the fantasy setting. The current audience consists of individuals who are attracted to the ideal of escapism into a high fantasy setting made possible through storytelling, roleplaying and make belief through tabletop gaming.

Motives

I have been playing video games for as long as I can remember and have always been enchanted by the unique designs of different characters, giving each their own memorable personality with mere illustration. Furthermore, the excitement of seeing the variations of current characters for special events, challenges, and themes, have always sparked joy into the gaming experience. With games forming a big part of my childhood and identity, I found it natural to be drawn to the industry as a career option. The opportunity to create memorable experiences, environments, and characters, that shaped my identity, has a strong pull. I see myself working as a Character illustrator, working on skin designs, splash screens, or concept art. Recently the game I have been playing the most is Dungeons and Dragons™. The game has an immersive atmosphere, that allows creativity and storytelling. I have always felt restricted to the limited race options, that are mainly human based. With the freedom of the personal project, I took the opportunity to combine my future career goals with my current interests, to create a new fantasy race.

Create/produce primary and secondary research to have an in-depth understanding of the subject matter.

          Animal emotional characteristics

          Anatomy research Evolution- habitat, diet, predation

   o Color theory

   o Visual research

          Animal feature design

          Class feature design

          Colour combinations

 

Explore development using visual language to support informed decision making for good designs

• Visual development: iterations of 5-7 ideas

   o Visual storytelling of the race

          Animal feature combinations

          Colour combinations

   o Class outfit combinations

   o Idea evaluation and improvement: 5-7 variations each

 

Make creative decisions for visual outcomes

   o Character pose

   o Background

Wings need to carry body weight = needs to be bigger, = needs to attach to “deer” body part, not humanoid back
